Nestled among the foothills and at the entrance to the Gila Wilderness is the historic town of Silver City. Home of Western New Mexico University, Silver City is blessed with the beauty of its natural surroundings.

The Gila National Forest, which covers some three and one half million acres, is a playground for nature lovers. Within the forest, you will find beautiful lakes, rivers and streams. Lake Roberts is a man-made lake amid the pines of the Gila. Its neighbor, Bear Canyon Lake, boasts a dramatic waterfall. Winding through the forest are the Gila and Mimbres rivers as well as several clear water streams.

The rugged mountains provide the scenery for hikers and horseback riders. Numerous trails will lead you into remote areas of the forest. View steep cliffs, towering pine trees and rolling meadows of wildflowers. Watch as deer, elk, antelope and bighorn sheep roam in their natural habitats. You will find numerous picnic grounds and campsites as well as cross-country ski trails in the winter.
